Abortion Pills: What You Need to Know Before Ordering Online

Processing your options when facing an unplanned pregnancy can feel overwhelming. It’s important to understand the facts surrounding your options so you can make an informed and empowered decision that is the best for you and your health. When considering an abortion, there are two main options you can choose from. A surgical abortion or a medical abortion, also known as abortion pills.

The abortion pill is a less invasive option but requires a series of pills to end the pregnancy. Ordering an abortion pill online can seem like the best way to privately view your options, but there are things you need to take into consideration if you are looking at ordering your abortion pills online.

What you need to know before ordering abortion pills online:

1. You will need to confirm the pregnancy and viability. This will be done after a positive pregnancy test and an ultrasound. This is an important step in protecting your health because of the medical risks associated with the abortion pill. You can receive a pre-abortion assessment by scheduling an appointment.

2. There are many risks with the abortion pill:

– Incomplete abortion
– Ongoing unwanted pregnancy if it fails
– Heavy and prolonged bleeding
– Infection
– Fever
– Digestive system discomfort

3. The warnings of online abortion pills were created to protect women. Because of the risks, it’s important to be under the care of a medical professional when taking the abortion pill.

According to the Mayo Clinic, a medical abortion isn’t an option if you:

– Are too far along in your pregnancy. You shouldn’t attempt a medical abortion if you’ve been pregnant for more than nine weeks (after the start of your last period). Some types of medical abortions aren’t done after seven weeks of pregnancy. If you are too far along in your pregnancy, the abortion pill can cause medical problems including more severe side effects.

– Have an intrauterine device (IUD) currently in place.

– Have a suspected pregnancy outside of the uterus. This is called ectopic pregnancy.

– Have certain medical conditions. These include bleeding disorders; certain heart or blood vessel diseases; severe liver, kidney or lung disease; or an uncontrolled seizure disorder.

– Take a blood thinner or certain steroid medicines.

– Can’t make follow-up visits to your provider or don’t have access to emergency care.

– Have an allergy to the medicine used.
